Almost every student who wants a higher band asks for a word list. We understand the appeal: a list looks finite, and finishing it feels like progress. But examiners are not testing whether you know difficult words. They are testing whether you use ordinary words precisely and less ordinary words naturally.
This is why a student who writes “the government should ameliorate the situation” often scores lower than one who writes “the government should fix the roads first.” The first sounds like a word inserted to impress. The second sounds like someone who knows what they mean. Vocabulary marks reward precision, not difficulty.
Why word lists fail
You learn the word, not its company
Words travel in fixed groups. You make a decision but take a risk. You are heavily dependent but strongly opposed. Nobody explains why. Learning “dependent” alone does not teach you that “heavily” belongs beside it, so you write “strongly dependent” and lose a mark for collocation.
You learn meaning, not register
“Kids”, “children” and “offspring” mean the same thing and belong in three different places. Using “offspring” in a Task 2 essay about schools is not sophisticated. It is wrong for the setting.
You learn recognition, not production
Recognising a word when you read it is not the same as reaching for it under time pressure. Most list-based study builds the first and never the second.
You forget on schedule
Words learned in isolation and never used again decay within days. The forgetting is not a failure of effort. It is how memory works without retrieval.
The method that works, twenty minutes a day
One article from a serious source, in a field you care about. Slightly above your comfort is the point: too easy teaches nothing, too hard exhausts you. Twelve minutes.
Do not write the word alone. Write the whole sentence you found it in. That sentence carries the collocation, the register and the grammar pattern with it, which is the part a dictionary strips away.
For each of the five, write one new sentence about something real: your course, your city, your family, your plans. Personal sentences survive because they attach to memory you already have.
Say them out loud in conversation, in a voice note, in class. A word is not yours until it has left your mouth without being planned.
Three short reviews spaced out beat an hour of cramming. This is the single highest-return habit in the whole method, and the one students skip.
What examiners actually reward
Precision over size
Using the exact right common word beats an approximate rare one. “The policy reduced traffic” is stronger than “the policy mitigated vehicular congestion” if reduction is what you mean.
Collocation
Natural word partnerships. “Severe consequences”, “widely accepted”, “a growing concern”. These are learned by reading, not by memorising.
Paraphrase
Saying the same idea a second way without repeating yourself. This is directly assessed in both IELTS and PTE and is trainable in a week.
Range within a topic
Ten precise words about education beat a hundred scattered words about nothing. Build vocabulary by theme: education, environment, technology, health, work, urban life. Those six cover most exam prompts.
What we would tell you in the room
If you have three weeks before your test, stop learning new words entirely. Take the words you already half-know and make them reliable, and spend the rest of your time on task structure. Vocabulary is a long game that rewards months, not weeks. Start it today for the test after this one, and start reading something real.
