How to shortlist properly

What the numbers on each card actually mean.

Most students shortlist by ranking alone and regret it. These four figures decide whether an offer turns into a departure.

The English requirement

The overall band is the headline, but almost every university also sets a minimum in each of the four skills. A 6.5 overall with a 5.5 in writing fails a 6.0-per-band requirement. Check the per-skill minimum before you book a test, not after you get the result.

The deposit

This is the amount payable before your acceptance letter is issued, and it is the figure that catches families out. It is not extra: it comes off your tuition. But it is due months before you fly, and for most visa routes you must pay it before you can even apply.

The tuition range

Tuition varies by subject within the same university, often by a wide margin. Business and social sciences sit at the bottom, engineering and computing in the middle, medicine and dentistry far above. Treat the range as a bracket, not a price.

The scholarship

Most awards listed here are automatic merit reductions applied at offer stage rather than competitions you enter separately. They routinely move a university from unaffordable to affordable, so ask about them before you accept any offer.

What a filter cannot see. Whether your subject is actually taught there. Whether your study gap is acceptable. Whether your grades meet the entry standard for that specific course rather than the university overall. Whether the intake you want is still open. Whether a conditional offer can realistically become unconditional in your timeline. That is what the free consultation is for, and it is why a shortlist is a starting point rather than a decision.
