A one-year master's and the Graduate Route.

More Northbound students go to the UK than anywhere else. A taught master's takes one year rather than two, which cuts the total cost of a postgraduate route even where the annual fee looks high, and the Graduate Route lets you stay and work after you finish.

September intakeJanuary intake

What it costs

The money, stated plainly.

Tuition is only part of it. Below is what you pay once, what you pay every month, and what the visa authorities need to see in the bank before they will issue anything.

Tuition & living

Bachelor's

£13,000 – £30,000 a year across the sector. Most Northbound students pay £13,000 – £17,000, because that is where the universities we place into sit.

Master's, one year

£13,000 – £38,000 across the sector. Most Northbound students pay £14,000 – £18,000 for the whole qualification, because a UK taught master's is one year, not two.

Master's, two years with placement

£18,000 – £23,000 in total, and this is the route most of our students actually take. You pay more overall but spread it over two years, and the placement year is the point: it is work experience on a UK CV, which matters more now the Graduate Route is shortening.

Living costs

This varies more than any other number on the page, so treat a single monthly figure with suspicion. £600 a month covers everything in Belfast. London is about £1,200 a month on a minimum budget, sharing, and closer to £2,500 living decently in a one-bedroom flat. Choosing the city is a bigger financial decision than choosing the course.

What the visa requires

Proof of funds

£13,761 if you study in London, £10,539 outside it, being £1,529 and £1,171 a month for 9 months, on top of any outstanding tuition. These rates rose on 11 November 2025 from £1,334 and £1,023, so older guides understate them. The money must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before you apply.

In Pakistani rupees

Roughly PKR 5.2 million for London or PKR 3.95 million outside it, plus your tuition.

Why it matters

Weak or badly-timed financial evidence is the most common avoidable cause of refusal. We build this part of your file first, not last.

Fixed costs

Paid once, or once a year. You can plan these to the rupee.

  • Tuition£13,000 – £17,000 a year for most of our students
  • Deposit to release the CAS£2,000 – £10,000, set by the university, and it counts towards your tuition
  • Student visa£558 since 8 April 2026
  • Immigration Health Surcharge£776 a year, paid upfront for the WHOLE visa length. A one-year master's is granted about 16 months, so you pay two years: £1,552
  • TB testAbout PKR 12,000 – 15,000, IOM-approved clinics only
  • IELTS or PTEPKR 60,000 – 70,000
  • Attestation, HEC or IBCC then MOFAPKR 5,000 – 15,000 depending on how many documents
  • Flights, one wayPKR 150,000 – 250,000

Variable costs

Monthly, and genuinely within your control. City and accommodation choice move these more than anything else.

  • Rent£350 – £600 a month sharing outside London; £700 – £1,400 in London. This single line decides your budget
  • Groceries£150 – £250 a month cooking at home
  • Transport£40 – £90 a month with a student railcard; London Zone 1–2 is nearer £120
  • Phone, books, personal£60 – £120 a month
  • Total, all in£600 a month in Belfast, £1,200 in London on a minimum budget, £2,500 in London living decently in a one-bed
Two changes worth planning around. Maintenance rose on 11 November 2025 to £1,529 a month in London and £1,171 outside, so any figure quoted to you before that date is too low. And from 1 January 2027 the Graduate Route shortens to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates, down from two years; PhD graduates keep three. Dependants: since the 2024 rules, only postgraduate research students (MRes, MPhil, PhD) can bring them.

Figures checked August 2026. Rupee conversions use approximate rates at that date (about PKR 375 to the pound, 325 to the euro, 195 to the Australian dollar, 165 to the New Zealand dollar) and are planning figures only, since rates move. Amounts are quoted as ranges because they vary by university, programme and city. Government requirements and university fees change; your counsellor confirms the exact numbers for your shortlist before you commit to anything.

Why the UK

What makes the UK worth considering.

1

Shorter degrees

A one-year taught master's means one year of tuition and one year of living costs, not two. For many families that single fact decides the destination.

2

Post-study work

The Graduate Route allows eligible graduates to stay and work after completing the degree, without needing a job offer first.

3

Two intakes a year

September is the main intake and January is a genuine second one, so a missed deadline is not a lost year.

4

Depth of choice

The UK is the network we know best and process most, across a wide range of subjects and entry profiles.

The honest part

What we tell you before you choose the UK.

Every destination has a trade-off. These are the ones that matter for the UK, and the reasons we would sometimes steer you somewhere else.

Talk it through with a counsellor
The financial evidence is strict

Funds must be held for a set period before you apply, in an acceptable account, with documents that agree with each other. This is where most avoidable refusals happen, and it is the part we build with you first.

The credibility interview is real

UKVI can interview you about your course, your finances and your plans. We run mock interviews on the questions actually asked until your answers are your own.

Costs vary widely by city

London is a different budget from the rest of the UK. We match the shortlist to what your family can genuinely fund, including the deposit due before the visa.

United Kingdom suits students who want the shortest route to a recognised degree and post-study work, and who can meet a demanding financial-evidence standard.

Timing

When to apply for the UK, and why it matters.

Intakes: September and January, with a small number of May starts.

How the year runs

September is the main intake and the one most courses run. January is genuinely competitive rather than a fallback, because fewer courses open and the same number of students apply. Start a September application the previous November if you can; by June the good scholarships are gone and CAS processing slows to a crawl.

Three things specific to the UK

  • A one-year master's means you are job-hunting from month six, not month eighteen. Plan your CV before you fly.
  • The Graduate Route lets you stay and work after the course. Confirm the current length with us at application, because it has changed before.
  • Bank statements are the single most common refusal cause. 28 consecutive days, in the right name, with a traceable source.

Documents & attestation

What you need, and how Pakistan verifies it.

The paperwork below is what a United Kingdom application runs on. Your counsellor confirms the exact list for your university and checks every document against the others before anything is submitted.

Documents you will need

Academic

  • Matric (SSC) and Intermediate (HSSC) certificates and mark sheets
  • Bachelor's degree and full transcripts, if applying for a master's
  • IBCC equivalence certificate if you studied O-levels or A-levels
  • IELTS, PTE or other accepted English test result

Identity

  • Passport valid well beyond your intended course end date
  • CNIC or B-Form, and your family registration certificate where asked
  • Passport-standard photographs to the destination's specification

Financial

  • Bank statements covering the period your destination requires
  • Bank certificate or maintenance letter from the account holder's bank
  • Sponsor's affidavit of support, with proof of their income
  • Evidence of the sponsor's income: salary slips, tax returns, business papers

Supporting

  • Statement of purpose written for this course, not a template
  • Academic or employer reference letters
  • Experience letters and CV where the course expects them
  • Medical and police documents where United Kingdom requires them

The attestation chain

Order matters. Skip a step and the next authority sends you back, which is the most common cause of avoidable delay.

The issuing body verifies first

Your board verifies Matric and Intermediate certificates; your university verifies your degree and transcripts. Nothing moves until this is done.

IBCC for school certificates

The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen attests Matric and Intermediate. If you did O-levels or A-levels, IBCC also issues the equivalence certificate, and that must be finished before attestation.

HEC for university degrees

The Higher Education Commission attests degrees and transcripts. It covers higher education only, not school certificates.

MOFA applies the state seal

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs attests only after HEC or IBCC has stamped the document. Appointments are booked online.

Apostille or embassy, depending on United Kingdom

Some destinations accept a MOFA apostille; others still want their own embassy in Pakistan to legalise the document. We confirm which applies to United Kingdom for your specific documents before you start.

Three things that changed recently

Attestation guidance published even a year ago is now partly wrong. These are the current points that catch people out.

  • HEC attestation is now fully digital. The Higher Education Commission moved degree attestation onto an online Degree Attestation System in May 2026, replacing the old in-person and courier route. Older step-by-step guides describing counter visits no longer apply.
  • MOFA no longer takes walk-ins. Appointments are booked online, so attestation has to be scheduled into your application timeline rather than done the week before submission.
  • O-level and A-level equivalence takes weeks, not days. IBCC equivalence must be complete before attestation can start, and Cambridge result slips are not accepted in place of the certificate. This is the single most underestimated delay in the whole process.

Government processes change. Your counsellor confirms the current requirement and fee for your documents at the time you apply, rather than working from a printed list.

Exclusive to Northbound

The Northbound Scholarship.

A scholarship offered by no other consultant in Pakistan, awarded personally by Northbound, on top of any scholarship your university already offers: up to £1,000.

A full preparation and test-fee refund is also provided to any student who successfully enrols at their chosen university abroad through Northbound.

Enquire about the scholarship

The visa itself

The UK: the fee, the insurance, and whether money buys speed.

Three numbers a family needs before committing, and one question almost nobody asks until it is urgent: can you pay to be decided faster? The answer is yes in exactly one of these eight destinations.

Which visa, and what it costs

The Student route, applied for by you at gov.uk. £558 since 8 April 2026, up from £524. Add biometrics £19.20 for applications made outside the UK, and VFS or Gerry's service charges of roughly PKR 6,000 to 8,000 at the centre in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi or Mirpur. You pay in rupees at the Home Office's own quarterly rate, about PKR 365 to the pound, and the market rate is irrelevant. Afterwards, the Graduate Route visa is a separate £937 from April 2026.

The insurance, and where to get it

You do not buy private health insurance for the UK. Instead you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, £776 for each year of your visa, in full and upfront, before biometrics. That buys NHS access on the same terms as a resident. The trap is the length: a one-year master's is normally granted about 16 months, so you pay for two years, £1,552. One thing almost nobody is told: the IHS is refundable if your visa is refused, but you must claim it within 30 days of the refusal.

Can you pay to go faster?

Yes, and it is the only destination here where paying genuinely buys speed. Priority is £500 for a decision in 5 working days. Super Priority is £1,000 for the next working day. Both are on top of the £558, are the same price worldwide, and did not rise on 8 April 2026. They are subject to availability at your VFS centre.

What we tell you about it

Priority is worth it when your CAS arrived late or your course starts soon. It is not worth it if you applied eight weeks out, and it does not make a weak application stronger. It buys a faster decision, including a faster refusal. Given that Pakistani files have been sitting past the standard three weeks through 2026, we now discuss it with every January applicant rather than treating it as a luxury.

Proof of funds

What the UK actually wants to see, from a Pakistani family.

Every destination asks for money. What differs, and what nobody writes down properly, is who is allowed to hold it, how long it has to have been there, and which Pakistani documents prove where it came from. This is the part we build first on every file, because it is the part that refuses people.

Who is allowed to fund you

ONLY three people. You, a PARENT, or a LEGAL GUARDIAN. A sibling, an uncle, a cousin or a family friend does not qualify no matter how willing they are or how much they hold. The fourth possibility is an official financial sponsor, meaning a government, an international company, a university or the British Council, which is a different route with its own letter.

The documents, exactly

Bank statement or a bank letter covering 28 CONSECUTIVE days, with the closing balance dated no more than 31 days before you apply. It must show the account holder's name, the account number, the date, the bank's name and logo, and the balance on every day of that period. If the money is in a parent's name you also need your birth certificate or Form B naming them, and a signed letter from them confirming they consent to you using the funds. Add your CAS, your passport, your TB certificate from an IOM-approved clinic, and any receipt for tuition already paid, because every pound paid reduces the maintenance figure pound for pound.

FBR returns and the NTN

UKVI does NOT list FBR returns as a required document, and any consultant who tells you the visa will be refused without them is wrong. What returns actually do is answer the question the caseworker is really asking, which is where this money came from. In Pakistan your CNIC IS your NTN for individual filing, so you do not need a separate number. The FBR tax year runs 1 July to 30 June and the return is filed on the IRIS portal with a wealth statement attached. Returns for the last two to three years are what a visa officer uses to test whether a claimed income is real. Since Pakistan's refusal rate rose from under 6 per cent to 41 per cent in the six months to March 2026, source of funds is being tested far harder than it was, so we now advise every student to bring the sponsor's returns even though the rules do not demand them.

What will not be accepted

Shares, bonds, pension funds, property, gold, prize bonds, insurance policies and overdraft facilities are all rejected outright. So is a balance that dipped below the required figure on any single day of the 28, even for an hour. So is a statement printed more than 31 days before you apply.

The one thing that refuses people

A large deposit landing days before the 28-day window opens. It is legal, it is often genuinely a family member selling a plot, and it is the single commonest reason a well-funded Pakistani file is refused, because the caseworker cannot see where it came from. Move money early and keep the paperwork that explains it.

Checked August 2026. Thresholds and document rules change without notice, and the rupee figure moves with the rate. We confirm every number against the current official guidance before you submit, and we never ask you to move money until the file is ready for it.

Thirteen questions

Everything a family asks about the UK, answered.

The questions we get asked most, in one place. Where we hold a figure we give it and date it. Where the answer genuinely varies, or where nobody publishes it, we say so instead of filling the gap. 13 of these 13 are researched, the rest we will confirm in writing for your specific university.

Timing

1How many intakes, and when

Three. September is the main one, January the second, and a small number of universities run a May start. September 2026 is closed to Pakistani applicants in practice; January 2027 is the live target.

2When applications open and close

Universities open roughly 10 to 12 months ahead. For a January 2027 start, apply between June and September 2026. Undergraduate courses go through UCAS, whose main deadline for 2027 entry is mid-January 2027.

3How long the whole process takes

Offer in 2 to 6 weeks. CAS after the deposit, 1 to 3 weeks. Visa is a 3-week standard service, but Pakistani files have been sitting past that: providers reported students still waiting weeks after biometrics in early 2026. Allow 4 to 6 months end to end.

Applying

4Application fees

Most postgraduate applications are free. UCAS charges £28.50 for up to five undergraduate choices. A handful of programmes, mostly MBA and medicine, charge £50 to £150.

5Documents needed to apply for admission

Matric and intermediate certificates, degree and transcripts, English test, passport, CV, personal statement, and two references. Degrees need HEC attestation, school certificates need IBCC, then MOFA. HEC has been online since May 2026; MOFA stopped walk-ins on 27 July 2026.

6Typical business fees, bachelor's and master's

Across the sector, a bachelor's in business is £13,000 to £30,000 a year and a master's £13,000 to £38,000. What OUR students actually pay is narrower, because of where we place them: £13,000 to £17,000 a year for a bachelor's, £14,000 to £18,000 for a one-year master's, and £18,000 to £23,000 IN TOTAL for a two-year master's with a placement year, which is the route most of them take.

Money

7Bank statement: how much, held how long

£13,761 for London, £10,539 outside, for 9 months, PLUS any tuition still unpaid. Held 28 CONSECUTIVE days, and the balance must not dip below the figure on any single day. The closing balance must be dated within 31 days of applying.

8Which money counts as proof of funds

Cash in a bank account only. Shares, bonds, pensions, property, gold, prize bonds and overdrafts are all rejected. The account must be in the student's own name or a PARENT or LEGAL GUARDIAN's. A sibling, uncle or family friend does not qualify, however willing.

9Initial deposit, and whether paying more helps

£2,000 to £10,000, set by the university, and it is what unlocks the CAS. Paying MORE does not improve your visa odds. No officer sees it as a signal. What it does do is reduce the tuition still outstanding, which lowers the amount you must show in the bank, pound for pound. That is the only reason to pay extra.

The visa

10Where the visa is applied for, and by whom

The student applies themselves, online at gov.uk, then attends a VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi for biometrics. Nobody can file it for you. Documents: passport, CAS, tuition and maintenance evidence, TB certificate from an IOM-approved clinic, English certificate, and academic transcripts.

11Visa outcomes for Pakistani applicants

This has changed sharply and you should hear it plainly. Pakistan's UK study visa refusal rate rose from just under 6% to 41% in the six months to March 2026. A near six-fold rise, the steepest of any major sending country. Over the full year to September 2025 the grant rate was still around 90%, so the annual figure hides what is happening now. Plan for scrutiny, not for the old odds.

12Do some universities make the visa easier?

No, and in 2026 the honest answer runs the other way. Sponsors must keep their refusal rate under 5% or risk losing the licence to enrol international students at all. Several UK universities have restricted or paused Pakistani admissions to protect that rating. Ask us which are currently open before you set your heart on one.

13What a strong application actually looks like

Funds in the student's or a parent's account, untouched for well over 28 days, with every large deposit explained. A course that follows logically from what they already studied. An English score comfortably above the minimum, per band. Deposit paid, CAS details matching the evidence exactly. And a student who can explain their own choice out loud. The credibility interview refuses well-documented files when the answers contradict the paperwork.

Checked August 2026. Visa rules, fees and thresholds change without notice. We re-check every figure before you apply, and we will put the answer for your specific university in writing. Compare all eight destinations on these same thirteen questions.
