PTE Academic is scored entirely by algorithm. There is no examiner. That has one large advantage and one large risk, and students who understand both outperform students who simply practise more.
The advantage: consistency. The same response gets the same score every time, with none of the variance that comes with human raters. The risk: the algorithm is literal. It rewards specific, observable behaviours, and if you do not produce them it cannot infer that you meant to.
What the algorithm is actually measuring
Oral fluency
Steady pace, no long pauses, no restarts. This is scored separately from whether what you said was correct. A fluent wrong answer often scores better than a hesitant right one, which feels unfair and is simply how the metric works.
Pronunciation
Intelligibility against a broad model of English, not a British or American accent. Clear consonant endings matter more than vowel colour. Pakistani students commonly lose marks by dropping final consonants rather than by having an accent.
Content
Whether the expected keywords and ideas appear. In Re-tell Lecture and Describe Image, naming the specific items visible or mentioned scores directly.
Form
Mechanical compliance. Summarise Written Text must be one sentence of 5 to 75 words. Two sentences scores zero regardless of quality. Write Essay must be 200 to 300 words. These are not style guidelines; they are pass or fail gates.
Preparing for an algorithm
Speak continuously, even when unsure
Silence scores nothing. A steady sentence that is partly wrong scores more than a pause. Train yourself to keep producing language while you think.
Read Aloud is free marks
It scores fluency, pronunciation and content simultaneously, and the text is in front of you. Students under-practise it because it feels trivial. It is among the highest-value items in the test.
Type accurately, not fast
Spelling is machine-checked. A fast typist with poor spelling scores worse than a moderate typist who is accurate.
Respect the word limits absolutely
Count them. The form gate closes before any assessment of your English begins.
Practical facts
- Scores are scaled 10 to 90. For a UK visa at B2 you need 59 in every component.
- Results typically arrive in 2 to 5 days, often faster.
- Score sending is free and unlimited, which matters if you are applying to several universities.
- You need PTE Academic UKVI, not standard PTE Academic, where a SELT is required. The fee is not transferable.
- PTE Academic is not accepted at Oxford or Cambridge. If either is on your list, this test is not an option.
- Pearson published an updated concordance table in July 2025 mapping PTE scores to IELTS bands per skill, not just overall. Speaking and writing conversions differ noticeably from the overall mapping.
What we would tell you in the room
PTE suits students who can be trained. Its scoring is predictable, so structured practice on question types produces reliable gains, faster than in IELTS. It punishes students who ramble, self-correct or ignore word limits. If you are disciplined and comfortable at a keyboard, it is often the better test. If you think aloud and circle back, it will score you below your real ability.
