Oxford ELLT, run by the Oxford International Digital Institute, has changed three times in 2026. For a test that only entered most Pakistani students’ shortlists a couple of years ago, that pace is unusual, and it is worth understanding because two of the three changes work directly in a student’s favour.
Note first what did not change: it is still not a Secure English Language Test. Universities accept it directly; the Home Office does not accept it where a SELT is required. Everything below sits inside that limit.
Change one: Skill Retake, launched 29 January 2026
Retake one section instead of the whole test
You can now resit Reading, Listening, or the combined Writing and Speaking section on its own when a single component falls short. Until this year IELTS was effectively alone in offering anything like it.
Retakes are still marked by a human
OIDI kept examiner marking for retakes, and the updated certificate shows which section was retaken, the revised score and the completion date. Admissions teams can see exactly what happened, which is why universities have accepted the change.
What it saves you
At around £120 a sitting, roughly PKR 43,000 to 46,000, a single-skill resit rather than a full one is real money for a Pakistani family, and it removes the argument for resitting a whole test to fix one weak skill.
Change two: the Academic content update, May 2026
Reading: three texts, not two
The Reading section now uses three texts of varying length, from about 200 to 600 words, rather than two of similar length. It carries 30 items and adds paragraph sequencing and gap-fill questions instead of relying on multiple choice. OIDI’s stated reason is to assess reading subskills more comprehensively, and in practice it means keyword-spotting alone stops working.
Listening: note completion added
Listening moves beyond multiple choice with note completion tasks, which test whether you followed the structure of what was said rather than caught one detail.
Writing: a new summary task
A short written summary of 170 to 200 words has been added. The essay stays but is now described as 190 to 250 words, tightened from 190 to 260. The section runs five minutes longer to accommodate the extra task.
What it adds up to
More task variety and more integration between skills. It moves ELLT closer to how IELTS and PTE already work, which makes preparation transfer more easily between them.
Why Express matters more in Pakistan than elsewhere
Every September and January, the same thing happens in our office. A student receives a conditional offer, the English condition is the only thing outstanding, the deposit deadline is ten days away, and the next available test date is after it.
A twelve-working-hour result changes that arithmetic completely. It does not make a rushed application a good one, and it should never become a reason to leave English to the last fortnight. But when a deadline has moved or an offer arrived late, it is the difference between this intake and the next one, and that is six months of a student’s life.
Weigh it against the obvious risk: a test taken with two hours’ notice is a test taken without preparation. Express solves a scheduling problem, not a readiness one.
The detail that decides it for Pakistani applicants
- Take ELLT Global, not Digital, unless you have written confirmation otherwise. The University of Westminster states that students in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are strongly recommended to take the centre-based Global version rather than the at-home Digital one. It is not alone, and Pakistan has approved centres.
- Acceptance figures differ by source and it matters which you rely on. OIDI’s January 2026 announcement says Oxford ELLT is accepted by over 250 universities globally. Several student-facing directories still quote 55. Check your own course page rather than either number.
- Scoring is on the OIDI scale of 0 to 12, mapped to CEFR and to IELTS. Roughly, 8 corresponds to IELTS 6.5.
- Standard results arrive in about 48 hours; Express in 12 working hours.
- The fee is around £120, roughly 40 per cent below an IELTS sitting in Pakistan.
- It is not a SELT. For any route where the Home Office requires one, you need IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI or a LanguageCert SELT instead.
What we would tell you in the room
Oxford ELLT is improving quickly and is now genuinely competitive on cost, speed and flexibility. None of that helps if your university does not accept it, or accepts only the Global version, or if your visa route needs a SELT. Those three questions come first, every time, and they take one email to answer. Get them answered before you pay for any test, and then let cost and speed decide.
