Ask ten counsellors in Lahore which English test to take and nine will say IELTS. That is not marketing inertia. There are specific, checkable reasons IELTS remains the safest choice for most Pakistani students, and there is one widely repeated claim about it that is simply false. This article separates the two.
The false claim first, because it costs students money. IELTS does not improve your odds of getting a visa compared with another approved test. The UK Home Office publishes a list of approved Secure English Language Tests, and every test on that list carries identical weight. A caseworker does not award points for the brand on the certificate. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.
Four real reasons it stays the default
Acceptance is the widest of any test
IELTS is accepted by roughly 12,500 institutions worldwide. Nothing else comes close. That matters most when your shortlist is not final: if you take IELTS, no university on your list will reject the certificate itself. Oxford and Cambridge, for instance, do not accept PTE at all. If either is on your list, IELTS is not the safer option, it is the only one.
The SELT version is unambiguous
For UK visa purposes you need IELTS for UKVI, not standard IELTS Academic. The content, format and scoring are identical; the difference is administrative, taken at an approved SELT centre with extra identity verification. Because that distinction is well known, fewer Pakistani students book the wrong one than with providers that sell several similarly named products.
A human examiner assesses your speaking
IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a trained examiner. That is slower and more nerve-wracking than speaking to a computer, and it is also the source of the genuine credibility argument set out below.
One Skill Retake exists
If you clear every section but slip on one, IELTS lets you retake that single skill within 60 days rather than resitting everything. At roughly PKR 71,000 a full attempt, that is a meaningful saving, and IELTS is the only major test that has offered it consistently.
The credibility argument, stated accurately
Here is the part that genuinely matters for Pakistani applicants, and it has nothing to do with which logo is on the certificate.
For a UK student visa, and increasingly for other destinations, you may be asked to attend a credibility interview. A visa officer speaks to you, usually by video, and forms a judgement about whether you are a genuine student. They have your English certificate in front of them. They are listening to you speak.
A gap between the two is a red flag. If your certificate says you speak at a high level and you cannot hold a conversation about your own course, the officer does not conclude that you had a bad day. They conclude that something is wrong with the certificate. That suspicion is difficult to recover from, and it is the single most common way a technically complete application still fails.
This is where the face-to-face speaking test does quiet work in your favour. An IELTS speaking band was earned in conversation with a human being, under the same conditions as the interview itself. A student who genuinely scored 7.0 in an IELTS interview will perform like a 7.0 speaker when a visa officer asks about their course. The certificate and the person match.
None of this means an AI-scored test is dishonest, or that a PTE score is worth less. It means that whichever test you take, your live spoken English must match what your certificate claims. If it does not, you have bought a document that will work against you.
Practical facts for Pakistan, 2026
- IELTS for UKVI is computer-delivered only in Pakistan. Paper-based UKVI testing was withdrawn here on 1 October 2024. Computer results arrive in roughly 1 to 5 days and sittings run through the week.
- UKVI test centres operate in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Multan, Hyderabad and Faisalabad.
- For a UK student visa you need CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 for below-degree courses. B2 corresponds to roughly IELTS 5.5 in every component, though your university will usually demand more.
- SELT results are valid for two years.
- Standard IELTS taken outside the UKVI framework is normally invalid where a SELT is required, whatever score you achieved.
What we would tell you in the room
IELTS is the safe default, not the automatically correct answer. If your speaking is strong in conversation, IELTS suits you. If you freeze in front of an examiner but perform well typing at a screen, PTE will produce a truer score, and a truer score is what you want. What you must not do is choose a test because someone told you it is easier to pass, then arrive at a credibility interview unable to speak at the level your certificate claims.
