How to Improve Your IELTS Reading Band

Sixty minutes, three passages, forty questions and no extra transfer time. Reading is the most improvable skill in IELTS because most lost marks are procedural, not linguistic.

Reading is where we see the fastest gains, and the reason is unflattering: most students are not losing marks because their English is weak. They are losing marks because they read the passage the way they would read a novel, run out of time, and guess the last ten answers.

The test gives you sixty minutes for three passages and forty questions. On the computer-delivered version there is no extra time to transfer answers, unlike the paper test, where ten minutes were traditionally set aside. That single fact changes how you must work.

Twenty minutes per passage. Not more. Most students spend twenty-eight minutes on Passage 1, feel confident, then have twelve minutes left for Passage 3, which is the hardest. They lose six to eight marks there and conclude the passage was impossible. It was not. They arrived at it with no time.

The question types, and how each one behaves

Matching Headings

Tests whether you can find the main idea of a paragraph, not a detail. Read the first and last sentence of the paragraph first, because topic sentences usually sit there. Do this type before reading the passage closely, and eliminate headings as you use them.

True / False / Not Given

The most feared type and the most mechanical once understood. True means the passage states it. False means the passage states the opposite. Not Given means the passage is silent. Students lose marks by using world knowledge: if you find yourself thinking “well, obviously…”, the answer is Not Given.

Yes / No / Not Given

Identical mechanics, but applied to the writer’s opinion rather than to facts. Look for opinion markers: argues, claims, suggests, it is likely.

Matching Information to Paragraphs

The most time-expensive type, because answers can appear in any order and one paragraph can hold two. Leave this type until last, when you already know roughly where things are.

Sentence and Summary Completion

Answers appear in passage order, which makes them fast. Note the word limit exactly: “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS” means a three-word answer scores zero even if it is right.

Multiple Choice

Answers appear in passage order. Read all options before returning to the text, because distractors are usually true statements that do not answer the question asked.

The method, applied to every passage

1
Read the questions first, for ninety seconds

Not the passage. Skim the question set so your brain knows what it is hunting for. Reading a passage without knowing the questions means reading it twice.

2
Skim the passage in three minutes

First and last sentence of each paragraph, plus the title. You are building a map, not understanding the argument. You should be able to say what each paragraph is broadly about, nothing more.

3
Answer order-preserving types first

Sentence completion, summary completion and multiple choice follow passage order. Answering these builds your understanding of the text for free, which then makes the harder types faster.

4
Scan for the answer, do not re-read

Take a distinctive word from the question, usually a name, number, date or technical term, and find it in the text. The answer is almost always in the sentence containing it or the one after.

5
Never leave a blank

There is no negative marking. An unanswered question is a guaranteed zero; a guess is not. In the final two minutes, fill everything.

6
Move on at twenty minutes, even mid-question

This is the discipline that raises bands. Mark it, move, come back if time allows. Practise with a visible clock until it becomes automatic.

What actually causes lost marks

Vocabulary in the questions, not the passage

IELTS paraphrases relentlessly. The passage says “precipitation declined”; the question says “rainfall fell”. Your job is recognising that these match. This is a paraphrase skill, and it is trainable in three weeks.

Spelling in completion answers

A correct answer spelled wrongly scores zero. Copy the word exactly as it appears in the passage. There is no reward for rephrasing.

Ignoring the word limit

Read the instruction for each question set separately; the limit changes between sets within the same passage.

Reading every word

You are not required to understand the passage. You are required to answer forty questions. These are different tasks, and treating them as the same is the single most common cause of a low reading band.

Facts worth knowing

  • IELTS Academic Reading is marked more strictly than General Training, because the passages are harder. The same raw score converts to a lower band.
  • Roughly 30 of 40 correct tends to land around band 7 on Academic Reading, though the exact conversion varies by test version.
  • Computer-delivered results arrive in 1 to 5 days. There is no transfer time on the computer version.
  • You can use One Skill Retake within 60 days if Reading alone is holding your overall band down.
  • Answers to order-preserving question types appear in the passage in sequence. This is a published feature of the test, not a rumour, and it is the basis of most time-saving strategy.

What we would tell you in the room

Straight from a counsellor

If your reading band is stuck at 6.0, do not read more English books. Sit four full timed reading papers, then look at where your wrong answers cluster. Almost always it is Passage 3 and Not Given. Fix the clock discipline first and the Not Given logic second, and the band moves without your vocabulary changing at all.

Test fees, formats and acceptance rules were checked in August 2026 and change without notice. Fees are planning figures, not quotes. Always confirm the current price on the official booking page, and confirm with your university in writing which test and which version it accepts before you pay.
