TOEFL iBT, run by ETS, is one of the oldest and most established English tests in the world. For Pakistani students it occupies a specific and fairly narrow position: it is the strongest choice if the United States is genuinely part of your plan, and usually the wrong choice if it is not.
That is not a criticism of the test. It is a statement about where its acceptance is deepest and where the practical logistics favour something else.
How the test is built
Reading
Academic passages drawn from university-style texts, denser than IELTS reading. If your academic reading is strong, this suits you.
Listening
Lectures and campus conversations. Note-taking is permitted and effectively required.
Speaking
Recorded rather than face-to-face. Several tasks are integrated: you read something, listen to something, then speak about both. This is the part students find hardest coming from an IELTS background.
Writing
Includes an integrated task where you contrast a lecture with a reading passage. This tests comprehension and synthesis together, not just composition.
Scoring and logistics
- Total score 0 to 120, made of four sections scored 0 to 30 each.
- American universities frequently set per-section minimums, not just a total. A strong total with one weak section can still fail.
- Results usually arrive in 4 to 8 days.
- The test runs roughly two hours, fully computer-based.
- Fees are set in US dollars on the ETS portal and are broadly comparable with IELTS and PTE.
When TOEFL is and is not the right call
Take it if the USA is in play
American institutions have the deepest TOEFL familiarity and the longest history with it. If your shortlist spans the US and elsewhere, one TOEFL result can serve both.
Take it if you read academically well
Students strong at dense academic reading and note-taking often outperform their IELTS band on TOEFL.
Skip it for a UK-only application
IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI and the LanguageCert SELT are faster to book in Pakistan, more universally accepted by UK universities, and free of the SELT ambiguity.
Skip it if speaking to a computer unsettles you
Speaking is recorded, and the integrated tasks compound the difficulty. IELTS or LanguageCert give you a human interviewer.
What we would tell you in the room
We rarely recommend TOEFL to a student applying only to the UK, Australia or Europe, not because it is weaker but because it adds friction without adding acceptance. If America is genuinely on your list, it becomes the obvious choice. Tell your counsellor about the American option early, because it changes the test decision before anything else.
