Nobody admits you to a UK doctorate. A supervisor does.

A PhD or research master’s in the United Kingdom is decided by one academic, not an admissions office. It is also the one student route that still takes your dependants.

A UK master’s place is decided by an admissions office reading a form against a published entry requirement. A UK doctorate is not. It is decided by one academic who has read your research proposal and concluded that they want to supervise it for the next three or four years. Everything else, the application portal, the entry criteria, the English certificate, is administration that follows that decision.

This is why so many strong Pakistani applicants get nowhere with a doctorate. They apply the way they applied for a master’s, to a university rather than to a person, and the file has nobody inside the institution arguing for it.

The nine things that actually decide a UK doctorate.

1
A supervisor has to want the project

Find the academic whose published work overlaps yours and approach them before you touch an application form. No supervisor means no place, whatever your marks are.

2
The proposal carries the application

Typically two to eight pages depending on the department. It has to state a question that has not been answered, why it matters and how you would answer it. Your transcript supports it. It does not replace it.

3
English is a lower bar than most people assume

IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in every band is the common doctoral requirement. Individual departments set higher, and language-heavy subjects usually do.

4
Funding is a separate contest from admission

An offer and a studentship are two different decisions on two different timetables. Many funded routes close months before the course starts, and self-funded applicants can often apply much later.

5
ATAS can add weeks you did not plan for

Some postgraduate science and engineering research needs Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance before the visa. It takes weeks and it is not optional for the subjects it covers.

6
It is the one student route that still takes dependants

The UK closed dependants to taught master’s students. Doctoral, other research and government-sponsored students may still bring a partner and children. For a married applicant in their late twenties or thirties this single rule outweighs every other comparison.

7
The Graduate Route treats you differently too

Post-study stay for taught courses falls to 18 months for anyone applying on or after 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates keep three years.

8
The Immigration Health Surcharge is paid for the whole visa

£776 a year, paid upfront for the full length granted, and again for every dependant. A three-year doctorate for a couple with one child is a five-figure payment before anyone lands.

9
Your funds must sit in the right hands

Maintenance of £13,761 for London or £10,539 outside, for nine months, plus any tuition still unpaid, held for 28 consecutive days without dipping on a single day. Only the student, a parent or a legal guardian may hold it.

What a doctorate costs before you land.

Visa fee£558 on the Student route, plus £19.20 for biometrics outside the UK
Health surcharge£776 a year for the full visa length, paid upfront, per person including dependants
Maintenance shown£13,761 London or £10,539 elsewhere for nine months, plus unpaid tuition
DependantsPermitted on doctoral and research routes, each with their own visa fee and surcharge
TuitionSet per project and per department, and often reduced or removed entirely by a studentship
The surcharge is refundable if the visa is refused, but only if you claim it within 30 days. Almost nobody is told this and the money is simply lost. If a doctoral application with dependants is refused, that claim is worth more than most people’s tuition deposit.

Where a doctorate is worth the years and where it is not.

A doctorate is the right answer when the work itself is the point, when you intend to stay in research or academia, or when bringing your family with you decides whether going abroad is possible at all. It is the wrong answer when it is being used as a longer visa. Three or four years is a long time to spend on a question you were never interested in, and supervisors can tell the difference at the first conversation.

The honest financial position is that a funded doctorate is one of the few routes abroad that can cost a Pakistani family very little, and an unfunded one across three or four years with dependants is among the most expensive things on this site.

  • Research master’s and doctoral records in our own panel are United Kingdom only. No other destination we work with has the same depth at research level.
  • Approach supervisors directly by email with a short proposal attached. Departments expect it and most publish staff research interests for exactly this reason.
  • A doctoral application has no single deadline in most departments, so a strong file is rarely too late.
  • Nothing on this page is a promise about a visa decision. Refusal rates for Pakistani applicants rose sharply in the year to March 2026 and every file is judged on its own.
What we would tell you in the room

We will not tell you that a doctorate is an easier visa because it takes dependants. It is a harder academic commitment with a lighter immigration rule attached, and those are not the same thing. If you want the dependant rule without the research, you are choosing three or four years of work you do not want, and the supervisor who has to sign for you will see that before we do.

English requirements, maintenance amounts, the health surcharge and the Graduate Route rules were checked in August 2026 and are stated as planning figures, not quotes. Home Office requirements change without notice and departmental entry criteria differ by project. Your counsellor confirms every figure against the specific department before you commit to anything.
