Master's, research master's and PhD abroad from Pakistan
If you hold a four-year bachelor's, a master's or an MPhil, you have the strongest academic position of any Pakistani applicant. You are also the least well served by the consultancy market, because a PhD earns no application commission and so almost nobody talks to you about one.
Almost every conversation a Pakistani postgraduate has with a consultant is about a one-year taught master's, because that is the product with the shortest sales cycle. It is often the right answer. But it is one of four, and the other three are barely discussed.
Four routes, and what each is actually for.
| Route | How long | Who it suits | Post-study position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taught master's, one year The standard UK route | 1 year | A four-year bachelor's at 2:2 or above who wants the qualification quickly and cheaply | 18 months in the UK from January 2027 |
| Taught master's with a placement year What most of our students take | 2 years | Anyone who wants experience alongside the degree. Costs more in total, usually less per year, and the placement is paid. | Same 18 months, but you graduate with UK experience |
| Research master's or MRes The bridge to a doctorate | 1 year | Anyone whose master's was taught rather than research and who intends to continue | Same as taught, but it opens the PhD |
| PhD or doctorate The route nobody sells you | 3 to 4 years | A master's or MPhil holder with a thesis and a subject they want to stay in | 3 years, and dependant rights retained |
From 1 January 2027 a taught master's graduate gets eighteen months in the UK. A doctorate keeps three years, and retains the right to bring a spouse and children where a taught master's no longer does. If you are married, or if what you want is time to convert a degree into a career abroad, that is not a detail. It is the whole decision, and it has changed in your favour.
What your CGPA maps to.
| UK classification | Percentage | CGPA | What it opens |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 70%+ | 3.5+ | Everything, including funded research places |
| 2:1 | 60%+ | 3.0+ | The competitive end of the panel. The standard bar for a research degree. |
| 2:2 | 55%+ | 2.5+ | Most of our panel. Enough for the great majority of taught master's. |
| Below 2:2 | Under 55% | Under 2.5 | A pre-masters, or a lower-tier university. Worth an honest conversation rather than an application. |
How a PhD is actually arranged.
This is the part that is never explained, and it is why so few Pakistani students end up on funded research places despite being well qualified for them.
An academic whose published work overlaps what you want to do. The department matters less than the person. Read three of their recent papers.
A short proposal that extends your own master's thesis, not a generic statement. Applications sent without this step are usually not read at all.
Once an academic is interested, the paperwork is largely a formality. Reversing the order is why most cold applications fail.
Studentships, research council funding and departmental scholarships are not advertised on international pages. Your supervisor knows what is available and when it closes.
Funding rounds close months before the intake. This is the single reason to begin earlier than a taught master's applicant would.
Pakistani MPhil holders routinely describe it as a second master's. It is a research qualification with a thesis, and for PhD admission that is precisely what a department is looking for. Describing it as coursework throws away your strongest asset.
Destination by destination, for postgraduates.
| Destination | Master's | Research and PhD | The deciding fact |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | One year, £14,000 to £18,000 on our panel | Strong, widely funded | Taught drops to 18 months post-study from January 2027. PhD keeps 3 years. |
| Ireland | One year, direct from a 4-year degree | Strong, and funded places exist | Stamp 1G gives 24 months after a Level 9 master's, against 18 in the UK. |
| Australia | 1.5 to 2 years | Strong research sector | Institution tiering affects visa processing speed, so the university choice matters more than elsewhere. |
| New Zealand | 1 to 2 years | Good, and cheaper than Australia | Up to 3 years post-study at Level 7 and above, and you pay tuition only after approval. |
| Netherlands | 1 to 2 years | Very strong, PhDs are salaried employment | A Dutch PhD is a paid job with a contract, not a scholarship. Genuinely different. |
| Türkiye | Cheapest master's on the panel | Available, YÖK-recognised | No work at all in year one, and no automatic post-study route. |
| Cyprus | Available at EU-recognised institutions | Limited | Confirm the campus is in the Republic. Work rights are the weakest of the eight. |
| Qatar | Narrow, branch campuses only | Limited | Staying on is an employment question, not an entitlement. |
On scholarships, plainly.
- We cannot apply for Chevening, HEC or government scholarships on your behalf, and neither can anyone else. They are applied for directly by you and they are free. A consultant charging a fee to submit one is charging you for something that costs nothing.
- University merit awards we do handle, and they are attached to your offer. Of our 168 universities, most publish a scholarship position.
- Research funding is different again. It comes through your supervisor and the project, not through an international admissions page, which is why the supervisor conversation has to happen first.
- Build the budget with no award in it. Anything that lands is relief rather than the plan.
Questions we get asked.
What CGPA do I need for a master's abroad?
Universities publish requirements as UK classifications. A 2:1 is broadly 60% or CGPA 3.0. A 2:2 is broadly 55% or CGPA 2.5. Where you sit against those two lines matters more than any other number in your file. A 2:1 opens the competitive end of the panel, a 2:2 opens most of it, and below 2:2 the realistic conversation is a pre-masters or a lower-tier university.
Is a one-year master's worth as much as a two-year one?
For recognition, yes: a UK master's is a UK master's. The difference is what happens around it. A two-year master's with a placement year costs more in total but usually less per year, the placement is paid, and it produces real experience. Most of our students take it, and the shortening post-study route makes that more important than it used to be.
Why does a PhD keep three years of post-study work when a master's does not?
The UK Graduate Route drops from two years to eighteen months for anyone applying on or after 1 January 2027. A doctorate keeps three years. That gap is the single largest change in the UK's offer to Pakistani students in a decade, and it runs in favour of research degrees. PhD study also retains dependant rights in the UK where taught master's no longer do.
How do I actually get a PhD place?
Not through an application portal. You find an academic whose work overlaps yours, write to them with a short proposal, and the formal application follows the conversation. Applications sent without that step are usually not read. Your existing master's thesis is the strongest thing you have. A two-page proposal extending it, sent to five carefully chosen academics, beats fifty generic applications.
Can I get a fully funded PhD?
Yes, and it is the normal way PhDs are done in the UK, Ireland and Australia. Funding is attached to supervisors and projects, not advertised on international pages. It takes longer to arrange, which is why it is worth starting eighteen months out rather than six.
Is my MPhil a master's or a research degree?
It is a research qualification with a thesis, and for PhD admission that is exactly what a department wants to see. Pakistani MPhil holders routinely undersell themselves by describing it as a second master's. Lead with the thesis.
If you hold a master's or an MPhil and you are being shown only taught one-year programmes, you are being sold the easiest thing to sell rather than the best thing for you. Ask about a doctorate. It takes longer to arrange, it is frequently funded, it keeps three years of work afterwards instead of eighteen months, and it is the one route where your existing thesis is worth more than your CGPA.

Questions
Asked and answered.
Can Northbound apply for Chevening or HEC scholarships for me?
No, and nobody can. Those are applied for directly by you and they are free. Any consultant charging a fee to submit one is charging you for something that costs nothing.
Can I switch subject at master's level?
Into business, management, data, project management and some computing subjects, usually yes. Into engineering, law, psychology or anything regulated, usually not without a conversion route. The switch needs a reason you can evidence, because it is one of the named triggers for a credibility interview.
