Study abroad after a 2-year BA, BSc or BCom
This is the most common problem in Pakistani admissions and the one most often answered dishonestly. A two-year degree is fourteen years of education where a master's abroad wants sixteen. That is arithmetic, not prejudice, and it has four solutions. Here they are, with what each one costs.
Universities count years of education, not the name on the certificate. A UK bachelor's honours degree is three years on top of thirteen years of schooling. Pakistan's Intermediate is twelve years, and a two-year BA takes you to fourteen. The four-year BS that HEC introduced sits at sixteen and is treated as equivalent.
So the question is never whether you are good enough. It is which bridge you take, and whether anyone has told you there are four.
If you hold a two-year BA and then completed an MA or MSc, you are already at sixteen years. Apply on the master's, not the bachelor's. Every route below becomes unnecessary. We meet students every intake who have been quoted for a pre-masters they did not need because nobody asked what else they held.
The four routes.
| Route | How long | You finish with | Honest assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct master's entry Where a university genuinely accepts 14 years | 1 year | A master's | The cheapest route by a wide margin, and it exists at a small number of named universities, sometimes with relevant work experience. Rare rather than impossible. We will tell you which rather than pretending it is common. |
| Pre-masters, then the master's PMP standalone, or an integrated version on one CAS | About 2 years | A master's | The standard answer. Ask whether it is standalone or integrated (the integrated version delivers both on a single visa document and removes a whole re-application and a second visa risk). |
| Top-up final year, then a master's Completes the bachelor first | About 2 years | A full bachelor's and a master's | Better if you ever want a regulated profession or a PhD, because you end holding a complete undergraduate degree rather than a bridge. |
| A second bachelor's abroad with credit Advanced standing | 2 to 3 years | A bachelor's | Expensive, and only worth it if you are changing subject anyway. Get the credit decision in writing before paying a deposit. |
What it costs, compared honestly.
Worked on UK numbers, because that is where the market is. Tuition only. Maintenance, visa, health surcharge and deposit sit on top and are covered in the destination guides.
| Route | Year one | Year two | Total tuition | What you hold at the end |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-masters then master's | £9,500 to £17,900 | £14,000 to £18,000 | £23,500 to £35,900 | Master's |
| Integrated pre-masters and master's | Delivered as one programme on one visa document | Similar, with less risk | Master's | |
| Top-up then master's | £11,000 to £17,000 | £14,000 to £18,000 | £25,000 to £35,000 | Bachelor's and master's |
| Direct master's, where accepted | £14,000 to £18,000 | n/a | £14,000 to £18,000 | Master's |
Destination by destination.
| Destination | With 14 years | With 16 years (BA plus MA) |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | The deepest market. Top-up and pre-masters widely available, and a small number of universities take a strong 14-year degree directly. | Direct master's entry at most of the panel |
| Ireland | Only a handful of private colleges consider a three-year degree, and fewer a two-year one. | Excellent. A four-year degree reads as an honours bachelor's, so a one-year master's opens directly. |
| Australia | Generally short. A graduate certificate or diploma is the usual bridge. | Direct master's entry |
| New Zealand | Short. A Level 7 graduate diploma is the bridge. | Level 8 postgraduate diploma or a 180-credit master's |
| Netherlands | Not accepted for master's entry. | Assessed by the university, generally accepted |
| Türkiye | Sometimes a second bachelor's with credit. Cheapest way to hold a full degree. | Master's entry at most universities |
| Cyprus | Sometimes a second bachelor's with credit, at EU-recognised institutions. | Master's entry |
| Qatar | Narrow. Programme availability leads. | Depends on the branch campus |
What to do next.
We need the marks sheet and the year structure. A percentage without the transcript cannot be converted, and the number of years is the whole question here.
An MA, an MSc, an MBA, a professional qualification, ACCA papers, or three years of relevant work. Any of these can move you from fourteen to sixteen, or make a fourteen-year application viable where it otherwise is not.
Pre-masters or top-up, standalone or integrated, with the exact progression requirement to enter the master's afterwards.
A pre-masters that does not guarantee entry to the master's on completion is a year of fees with a second application at the end of it.
This is a two-year plan. A family that budgets one year and discovers the second in month ten is the commonest failure on this route.
Questions we get asked.
Can I do a master's abroad with a 2-year BA?
Rarely directly. Universities count years of education, and a two-year BA, BSc or BCom is fourteen years. Most master's programmes abroad require sixteen, from a four-year HEC-recognised degree. That does not close the door, but it means one of four specific routes and you should know which before anyone takes a fee.
I have a 2-year BA and an MA. What do I hold?
Sixteen years, which meets the requirement at most universities. Apply on the master's, not the bachelor's. This is the single most under-used fact in Pakistani admissions and it turns a blocked application into a direct one.
What is a top-up year?
A one-year programme that completes a full bachelor's degree by adding the final year to the credit you already hold. You finish with a complete UK bachelor's, then apply for a master's normally. Two years in total, but you end with two qualifications rather than one.
What is a pre-masters?
A bridging year that takes you from fourteen years to master's entry. A standalone pre-masters is roughly a year, then you apply into the master's. An integrated version delivers the bridge and the master's as one programme on a single visa document, removing a whole re-application and a second visa risk. Ask which one you are being offered: they are priced similarly and one carries materially less risk.
Is a top-up better than a pre-masters?
It depends what you want afterwards. Pre-masters plus master's takes about two years and you finish with a master's. Top-up plus master's takes about two years and you finish with a full bachelor's and a master's, which matters if you ever want to work in a regulated field or apply for a PhD. The top-up is the stronger qualification; the pre-masters is sometimes faster to arrange.
Does a 2-year BCom count for an MBA?
Usually not on its own. MBA programmes also want work experience, and that experience can strengthen a fourteen-year application at some universities. It is worth asking specifically rather than assuming either way.
A two-year degree is a real obstacle and it is also a solved problem. What it is not is a reason to accept the first thing you are offered. Check whether you already hold sixteen years, ask whether the top-up gives you more than the pre-masters for the same money, and get the progression requirement in writing before you transfer anything.
Tuition ranges are the 2026/27 figures we hold on our own panel, reviewed August 2026. Individual programmes vary; we confirm each one against the institution before it reaches you in writing.

Questions
Asked and answered.
Will a top-up degree be recognised in Pakistan?
A UK bachelor's degree is a UK bachelor's degree, however you entered it. HEC equivalence is decided on the awarding university, not on your entry route.
Which destination is best with a 2-year degree?
The United Kingdom, because it has by far the deepest top-up and pre-masters market. Ireland reads a four-year Pakistani degree as an honours bachelor's, which is excellent once you hold four years but does not help at fourteen. Türkiye and Cyprus will sometimes admit to a second bachelor's with credit, which is worth considering if you are changing subject anyway.
